Fish Oils
Increasing your intake of fish oil fatty acids or omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3 long-chain-decreases your risk of dying from a heart attack. Eat more fish or take fish oil supplement is a safe, a worthwhile investment for men and women, whether or not you have had heart disease in their lifetime. However, women with potential to become pregnant should limit their consumption of fish with a high volume of mercury such as shark, swordfish, mackerel, and fish that contain traces of industrial pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Most states and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings about dangerous or prohibited fish.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that retard oxidation by neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can oxidize, or damage, other molecules. The oxidation causes the cells of arteries absorb “bad” cholesterol or low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your blood more easily. The more LDL cholesterol is absorbed, the greater the risk of plaque formation and narrowing of the arteries. Antioxidants can reduce the risk of heart disease by slowing the oxidation process and reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol absorbed. Vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and coenzyme Q-10 are antioxidants.
